Alginate Powder is perfect for artists and hobbyist to create moulds. Alginate is a natural powder derived from seaweed and is one of the safest ways you can make moulds and castings of people's hands, feet, faces or bodies. Since it's made out of seaweed, there are small chances of an allergic reaction.
Step 1 - Mix 3 parts water and 1 part alginate casting powder (in weight) using a digital weighing scales. Pour the water over the alginate and mix using an electric mixer until you obtain a smooth and creamy consistency. Apply the alginate on the object or body part you would like to cast.
Step 2 - Wait with your hand in the mixture or the object, without moving and the alginate will harden after approximately 2.30 to 5.30 minutes.
Step 3 - Extract your hand or the object slowly and delicately from the mould.
Step 4 - Once you have obtained the negative of the form you want to reproduce, you can then create the object using gypsum powder (purchased separately) or any material of preference.
Step 5 - Pour the gypsum powder (purchased separately) and move the mould around to remove any air bubbles that get caught in the mixture. Wait until this is completely dry before removing the mould from around the object.
