Gesso di Bologna (or Bologna Gypsum), is a natural hydrated calcium sulphate (gypsum). It has a unique soft feel due to the fineness of the grain with which it is made. It can be mixed with any binder without affecting its characteristics. It is used to obtain the stucco, that is a good preparation for paintings and creates the foundation for the technique of gilding.
